Swedish Chocolate Tin c.1900
A recent sale for eurotreasure was an old, extremely unusual Swedish chocolate tin. These old tins were the actual packaging of the time. The products like chocolate, coffee and tea were sold in highly decorated tins, most of the time. This one has quite a story behind it. It was acquired at a church auction. This tin had been donated to the church, with the proceeds of the day going to help children in Africa. The bidding was fierce that day as the neighborhood was exclusive, and the pockets deep. We could not let the 'dancer' tin get away, and we bid competitively to win it. A tin like this is rare, not many were made, the condition is good enough so as to still get a feeling of nostalgia from the item. The screened painting is stylistically, towards the cartoon-like; depictions one often sees of the folk costumed people that decorate the tin. The same day we found the tin, we found an old spice grinder, unlike any we have ever seen. By the time we got back to the Volvo, we were carrying bags of small ceramics, utensils and fabrics. It was a bright sunny day and the apple cake, vanilla sauce and coffee made it all the more fun!
